Heidi Forster Art and Design : September 2012

This is my first official project on this course, and as it stems from an orginal piece of art it cover unit 16 of my drawing qualification.

Inspirations from the museum

I've decided to go with this painting as my inspiration for this project:

so whilst doing spot welding with Kim I made a sun. Its a fairly simple piece but added to a colourful background, it could look quite effective, however it is dangerous its already cut me twice.

I made this at Dolphinholme. I have a vague idea on how I want my final piece to look. I'm definitely intending on using a range materials and colours:

probably not rocks, wood and leaves though.

I decided to use a range of different mark making media in my sketchbook to develop my ideas furthur and determine what sorts of techniques I'm better at.

For this piece I collaged different coloured tissue papers. I think the end result is fairly successful, however the prossess was far too fiddley and went wrong several times before finally going right.

The top part of this image is made from two different coloured materials and ribbon. I dont particularly like the end result, but I do like the look of the ribbon as the sun rays and I plan to use them in the same way for my final piece. The bottom half of this image is just simply acrilic paint. I feel that over all it looks quite childish as the colour of the paint is far to bright and generally a bit scruffy. I applied the paint quite thick to the paper which I feel has created a nice texture to the painting.

This is just a black acrylic painting of the print. I did this in hope to copy it onto acrylic and create several different versions of the print using the print making process.

This is my favourite version of the print so far. It is the most like the original of all the things I've done relating to this project. I want my final piece to be very similar to this, but on canvas, and with the added use of ribbon to add an extra dimension to the painting. I'm also thinking of adding a thin layer of PVA glue to give the piece a shiny effect.

Universities like you to back up your work with a contextual influence, so after having a tutorial with Richard we decided I could link my work to David Hockney. So, I'm going to do some research about him and his work and then I can also add him to my personal statement, as an influence of mine.

David Hockney

I like how David's work is almost abstract, he uses very vibrant colours on what would usually be fairly natural looking colours.

I developed my sunset painting onto canvas:

I then started to add silhouettes to the sunsets, similar to African art:

I've also done some experimenting on different surfaces, here I painted on a letter, cardboard and a plastic bag.

This is an easy way to recreate artwork, and it can look quite effective. I intend to experiment futhur with it, however I think I'll find it difficult to include in my final piece.

Gerhard Richter

As I've delved furthur into Richter's work I've found I appreciate it much more than I did when I first came across it in Richard's roundabout. I can definitely use this in my London-themed project. I'm thinking of going with a blue and white colour theme, so I need to go to the Bank of Mum for paint. I don't think I will use this technique in my museum project though.

Robert Rauschenberg

I really like Rauschenberg's use of colour, it gives his work a really upbeat and contemporary feel. I also like how he has done pop art, I really like some pop art artists particularly Andy Warhol.
